Kitchen Plumbing Basics

If you’re planning on building or remodeling your kitchen, what you first need is a well laid plan. A well built kitchen serves three major purposes: storage, food preparation, and clean up. Traditionally, home kitchens are built on one of three major lay outs. These include: the U-shape, the L-shape, and the Galley. Each of these designs positions the sink, oven, and refrigerator in a triangle configuration. These designs were proven to be the most effective by studies taken during the 1950s. While there have been some new suggestions on how to make kitchens more efficient, these standards have pretty much stayed the same.

Luckily, if you’re redesigning your kitchen, you will find that the plumbing is less complicated than it is in bathrooms. In a kitchen there are two plumbing systems that need to work together, the incoming water supply, and the outgoing waste water which operates with the assistance of vents. Together they are referred to as DWV: Drain Waste Vent. Your sink is the main plumbing unit in the room, and is often connected with other appliances such as a waste disposal and dishwasher. Because of this, there is usually just one valve that supplies water to the whole kitchen. Make sure that this valve is turned off before attempting to make any household kitchen plumbing repairs.

There are two types of pipes involved in the DWV: vent pipes used to maintain pressure, and smaller drain pipes which are carried into the soil sack. The sink complex is made up of a group of pipes which run vertically and a large drain pipe. If you have an island in your kitchen, supplying water to it can be more complicated and costly as the pipes will have to run through the floor. This isn’t hard to do if you have a basement, but prepare for complications if you only have a crawlspace. Full scale kitchen remodeling should probably be done by a licensed professional. If you decide to do it yourself, it could lead to problems when you try to sell your home, even if you are successful in your work.

There are some helpful tips you can follow in order to preserve the functionality of your kitchen plumbing. Regarding garbage disposals never put in hard to grind objects like poultry skins, banana peels, and celery. Always run cold water down the drain 15 seconds before and after use. Especially, do not pour grease down the drain. Always wipe off grease from pots and pans before washing in the sink. To aid the cleaning of your garbage disposal, grind ice cubes or citrus rinds for about 30 seconds. Pour dish detergent into your running disposal. Rinse off debris by running cold water for 30 seconds. If your disposal ever stops running, it could be due to overheating. If this is the case, turn the switch off, being careful never to put your hands down the drain. Make sure it is plugged in. Press the reset button. Turn the disposal unit back on.
